RIP - Charles Allen

a perspective by Judith & Fred Thomas

[ West Adams (Los Angeles), CA ]     April 1, 2011.  Mr. Charles Allen - March 23, 1923 / March 19, 2011 was laid to rest today and his daughters - Constance and Tina, as well as the rest of the family coordinated an outstanding "homegoing" celebration.

Charles was a special friend and true servant and we feel very blessed to spend the time with him.  A couple of attributes that come to mind when thinking of Charles:

Of course everyone has their perspective but let us share briefly how Charles shared a part of his life with us. In the African-American tradition, when support is needed "a call" goes out.  During the early 1990's as the Friends of Allensworth were under pressure to assist the State of California and increase visitation to Allensworth State Historic Park.  George Finley had the vision to reach out to major metropolitan areas and educate people on the benefit of visiting the park.  On a Friday night, at the Baldwin Hills Mall, Finley was accompanied by Park Ranger Phillip Hill and Los Angeles became the first Friends of Allensworth chapter.

The Chapter operated out of our offices, Professional Realty Mortgage which was located at the Bank of America tower on Olympic and Union.  It was Charles Allen who was elected Vice President to handle day to day activities on behalf of growing the chapter.  Although the position was volunteer, Charles took great pride and would arrive as a regular part of the staff - putting in full-time hours as he went about his task.  On the 10th floor in his office, he spoke to thousands about Allensworth.  The office eventually moved to Slauson near Rimpau and featured a walk-in exhibit.  Charles played a critical role in increasing visitation to Allensworth.

One of his favorite phrases was "historically correct" so he took great pride to study Allensworth and anything associated during that period so that his interpretation was accurate.

As time passed, Chales was able to purchase Mr. Davis' property which was just adjacent the park and eventually became a critical citizen of Allensworth, CA.

Charles led a remarkable life and he loved to share his knowledge and resources for the benefit of others.  Although he cannot be replaced, his spirit will forever live on as during his physical stay on earth, he was a benefit to many, but our belief in God knows his spirit will live on.
