Mary Gross came to Allensworth in 1911 or 1912 and served as a nurse for the town. She delivered babies and treated ailments, working out of her small drug store. A humorous incident occurred when the barber, Frank Milner, was bitten by a spider in a very special place and Mrs. Gross had to take care of it. When the guys got through with Frank, he almost had to leave town. A more serious incident occurred when Mr. Hackett accidentally shot his hand with a shotgun while rabbit hunting. He came to Mary Gross for treatment and she founds that the hand was so badly damaged that she had to remove it. Henry Singleton, who a young boy at the time remembers Mr. Hackett placing his hand on the counter while Mary chopped off the damaged part with one stroke of a hatchet. The store was stocked with notions and women's things like perfume, jewelry, cosmetics, and clothing. Other stock items included patent medicines, tooth brushes, stationary, school books, the daily papers, popular magazines and other periodicals. Mrs. Gross died on November 2, 1918 at the age of 52 of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was buried in the Allensworth Cemetery on November 5, 1918. ******
