  • A. Allensworth is a colony/town created in 1908. The town currently features a portion used for a State Historic Park.

  • Q. Can a person take tours??
  • A. During most days a "walking tour" is available which will show the exterior of the restored buildings. The visitor’s center is also open 10am - 4pm to get a better glimpse of life at Allensworth during the early 1900's. During special events, Docents are available and the interior of the buildings are open. The buildings portray life during that era and detail has been provided to present a historically correct environment.

  • A.    The park was adopted in 1972 and opened in 1976. 
  • Q. What are the hours of park operation??
  • A. The park is open everyday from 10am to 4pm. However on certain dates special events are planned throughout the year.
  • Q. Is there a cost to use the park??
  • A. The cost usually apply during special events only and are as follows (keep in mind fees are subject to change without notice and are administered by the State Dept. of Parks.:
  • $ 4.00 per automobile
    $12.00 per van (20 or less)
    $20.00 per bus (21 or more)

  • A. Visitors to Allensworth are encouraged to bring food. There are several barbeque pits available for use. During special

  • A. The basic admission is per vehicle (subject to change without notice and administered by State Dept. of Parks)

  • Q. Do people still live in Allensworth??
  • A. Yes, there are approximately 300 residents who live in Allensworth. The school which is from grades K-8, accommodates approximately 150 students and expanding as you read this.
  • Q. Are there any special events held???
  • Next Special Event is April 28th - GospelFest  Anyone person may seek permission to hosts a special event. Events are typically held the second Sat. of each month and include the following months - February, May, June & October.
  • Q. Can I take the train to Allensworth??
  • Yes, however only by advance approval of Amtrak. Please note from the North, the train is nonstop, however from the South. The Amtrak bus will take you to Bakersfield (as there are no train tracks through the Grapevine, which is the most traveled route) and the you will broad the train to come to Allensworth.
  • Q. I have a group that wants to visit, but I do not have transportation??
  • Depending on where you live, it is a good suggestion to contact your political representatives (Council person, Assemblyperson, Supervisor, etc.), as on occasions bus transportation may be provided (to/from) free of charge, or at a nominal fee.
  • Q. How is the weather in Allensworth??
  • A.  The weather in Allensworth ranges from cold/very cold in winter months to hot/very hot during the summer months. When traveling through the grapevine during the winter months it is advised to check travel advisory's, as oftentimes the roads are slick due to light snow and other implements.

 

  • Q.  What is Friends of Allensworth??
  • A.  Friends of Allensworth (FOA) is the recognized Cooperating Association authorized to work with the State in providing special events and other activities to educate the general public.  FOA is an all volunteer organization and was originally started in conjunction with Rangers and Mrs. Nettie Morrison in the mid-80's.  Since then, through diligent dedication the organization has been headed by Mr. George Finley, who taught school at Allensworth.  Currently there are two Friends of Allensworth groups (San Diego & the main chapter operated from Bakersfield).

  • Q. What is planned for the future of Allensworth????
  • A. The document Allensworth 2008 outlines plan to build up historically sites and complement efforts for town development.
