This is the current Allensworth that most visitors don't know EXISTS

Allensworth is about Knowledge....

As you read this the current project at Allensworth SHP is the construction of the Milner Barber Shop, and the Hackett House. Many, many, as a matter of fact the majority - 95% + who visit Allensworth have no clue of the rich history. Beyond the portion of property (240 acres) that is owned by the State of California Parks System (Commonly referred to as Allensworth State Historic Park) is the town of Allensworth. Equipped with town hall, school (yes school) which serves over 100 students, grades K - 8, is the town itself. The key to understanding the town is accepting you are in a rural setting, thus you will not see buildings packed next to each other.

Explore the town and then you will gain a broader perspective of Allensworth's rich history and contributions to California and the world. Coming soon - updated pictures of current townsfolk. Several tidbits......the Allensworth Progressive Council meets on a regular basis. The school goes from K-8, as graduating students typically go on to Delano High School. The Current elementary school has approximately 125 students. The cemetery is locating approx. 2.5 miles southwest of park.

One item of constant confusion, in a good sense was the Allensworth Christian Church. Now located in the town adjacent Nettie Morrison's property, the building served for many years and had been located within the State Park area. The ministry is led by Rev. Benjamin Beavers.

As best described, Allensworth is a town of migration. People are always coming and going, which adds to the rich history because everyone has a different perspective of Allensworth. For many, who were not African-American, yet were discriminated against Allensworth was the only legitimate place to get a basic education. CHECK LINK BELOW AS WE HAVE FINALLY STARTED TO EXPLORE THE CREATION OF ALLENSWORTH STATE HISTORIC PARK. THANKS TO MRS. BERKLEY FOR COMING FORWARD. Stay tuned and check back frequently...........

Allensworth has such rich history which is why it is a jewel. On the other hand, those who have only recently discovered their blackness are often heard (when speaking about the town's demise) "the man got us again - they fall for the water poisoning line" Do your homework!!! You gotta believe that in a town that was made up as a Who's Who of Black America - how could they be duped by water? There is more to this tale so stay tuned. Water was an element but could there own success have been their demise???

The town was remarkable and with segregation quite rampant - Allensworth was billed as the place to be coming out of 1910. There was tremendous hope. Even when you visit you can witness their pride as the early pioneers would have to be classified as upward mobile. They may have been in the "country" but remember Agriculture was a huge and profitable business and through the expertise of Oscar Overr and others they were going to capitalize. Stay tuned.
